Choices Center for Care - Opening in early 2026
Choices Support Center is proud to introduce Choices Center for Care, our new mental health treatment center for Basic Mental Health Care (BGGZ), located in Amsterdam. We specialize in treating LGBTQI+ asylum seekers and status holders with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and trauma-related symptoms.
Our services are accessible and personalized. We offer psychological assessments and evidence-based treatments, always tailored to the unique needs of each individual. Together with one of our psychologists, clients develop a personalized treatment plan with clearly defined goals and desired outcomes. We strive to provide guidance in working toward stability, recovery, and personal empowerment.
Our approach

- Treatment in a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment
- We work on the basis of a referral from a general practitioner, medical specialist, or clinical psychologist.

Personal assistance
When life feels tough and everything seems to be against you, we are here to help. We understand that many people turn to drugs or other substances to deal with the pressures of life. However, using drugs or alcohol to deal with pressure can cause other problems and negatively impact your personal goals and well-being. Not everyone feels the need for treatment, and some just want support in creating a plan to minimize or resolve issues surrounding drug use. At Choices, we work together to create a plan that works best for you. In practice, we find that people often drop out when they begin treatment without being sure they are ready or really need it.
Choices @ AZC
Choices comes to you in the AZC and provides the support you need. Our psychologist and Community Services Coordinator visit the agreed-upon AZCs. At each AZC, our Community Services Coordinator organizes a social talk group and our psychologist meets with residents for personal counseling. Residents can also schedule appointments for counseling sessions online or in our office. For LGBTQ+ residents living in AZCs we do not physically visit, we offer a toll-free national helpline and live chat service, available Monday through Friday. Whichever AZC you are in, Choices is ready to help.
Social support group
Choices Support Center (Choices) offers four types of meetings each month for social support groups. There are groups in the AZCs we visit, at our office, at the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam and online. Each group has a different purpose and number of participants. Our social support group helps develop a positive social network of people who support healthier change and helps AZC residents integrate into the queer community and Dutch society. Each week you can join activities you feel comfortable with. Choices' social support group provides an opportunity to share your feelings, voice your opinions and learn more about the many opportunities available to you. Here there are no boundaries for you and everyone accepts you as you are.

Been there, Done that, Should have known
Jason told inspiring stories about his vision and own experiences, as Americans often do, but also repeatedly asked me the critical question why I wrote my book VERNEUKT! I think we can help more people faster if the subject of chems and sex becomes a more accessible topic of conversation and the persistent secrecy and stigmas are broken. The most important starting point of the personal counselling and discussion groups at Choices is to surround yourself (again) with a network of people who support you in taking healthier decisions. It is precisely this social aspect that is healing for many users and former users, but at the same time the emptiness, fear and insecurity that you feel when you leave the world that you used to trust, but which is rotten, is so paralysing that you sink even further into your isolation or.... relapse. Been there, done that. -
Participant lunchtime session
I would like to thank Choices for everything they have done for me. I found my first evening in particular very special. Before I came to you I spoke to Hans on the telephone. Due to coronagraphs I was unable to come to the location, but Hans made it possible with great effort that I could. I really appreciate that, because due to my private circumstances I really needed personal contact. When I arrived, Hans was waiting for me at the front door. He introduced himself and introduced me to Thomas. There were a few other people present online. In the session, open stories were told and people listened to each other. Many good questions were asked, which made me look at the situation in a different way. The hour flew by and it helped me a lot in a difficult time.
