Choices offers a bi-weekly social support group in asylum-seeking centers (AZCs) that we visit, upon permission. The groups are led by our Community Services Coordinator and a trained volunteer. Both have personal experience living in the AZC and going through the asylum process.
Our social support groups are made up of LGBTQI+ residents who share common issues, have similar experiences and can offer each other emotional support. In this group, people come together as members of a community. During each group meeting, we focus on community building and explore topics such as self-identity, empowerment, preparation for IND interviews and support needed during the transition to a new country. We help each other become more empowered and motivated to make the changes we want for ourselves.
The Choices support group provides a confidential, safe space to get to know yourself and make friends. Participating in a group can reduce loneliness, normalize life events, promote change, teach coping skills and learn new relationship skills. Groups help us learn how to get in touch with our own feelings in front of others.
